Effective Termite Control Strategy Suggested by Professionals from Gilbert AZ

Effective Termite Control Strategy Suggested by Professionals from Gilbert AZ

A house or any other building experiencing termite infestation will need immediate help to prevent further damage.

Experienced service in Gilbert AZ may be the best option for termite control. Estimates suggest that consumers spend more than $3 billion annually to prevent this problem.

However, you may be able to take some decisive steps for termite control to stop this problem and keep it from getting worse.
Termites can easily invade a building and live in the woods for months before anyone notices the problem.

These pests hide behind doors, windows and walls, under floor covering and inside the insulation. As a matter of fact, it is even possible for damage to occur on baseboard and trims until something effective is done for termite control.

Termites generally feed on the inside of the wood leaving the surface intact. Find hallowed out wood. Surfaces that appears rippled and sunken can also be the signs of termites making tunnels.

The most effective termite control method suggested by our Gilbert termite experts is to install bait stations with poison. While bait stations for termites are incredibly tricky and tend to fail, it can be tried before you call us in…though we highly suggest against it.

Termites come to these bait stations and drinks the poison. They also take this poison to their shelter for other members to drink. Eventually, the entire generation of termites will be wiped, though this exercise takes some time.

If you want more effective and faster result with large colonies and extensive damage, an experienced and professional help from our Magic Pest termite professionals, who are also concrete and masonry experts, is truly your best bet.

You can also take steps for termite control by eliminating the food sources. Remove woodpiles located around the building because these can be attractive to termites. Moisture can also create a welcoming environment. Consequently, you should repair all the plumbing leaks around the building.

Remain vigilant for effective termite control and don’t hesitate to call Magic Pest Control to ensure that your residence does not experience serious damage due to the insatiable appetite of these pests.

Roof Rats: What Are They and How to Get Rid of Them

Roof Rats: What Are They and How to Get Rid of them

Roof rats have been invading all parts of the East Valley over the past few years.

In 2013, Mesa and Tempe saw an influx of roof rats.

This year, roof rats have invaded Gilbert, Arizona.

The problem with roof rats is that once they invade a neighborhood, they are extremely difficult to get rid of.

“This is the time of year, as it starts warming up, that they start spreading out and starting their breeding cycle,” said David Guerrieri, field supervisor with Maricopa County Environmental Services’ vector-control division. “They start nesting again, so you will see more of an activity this time of year, and then when it gets hot during the summer, they kind of hunker down and wait.”

Today, let’s talk about how roof rats can infest your Gilbert home, and how to get rid of them…

Roof Rats- What Are They and How to Get Rid of Them

Roof Rats Have Invaded Gilbert, AZ

Roof rats first invaded the East Valley in 2001 in Phoenix, and from there spread throughout Mesa, Chandler, Tempe and Gilbert.

Roof rats love warmer temperatures, which is why their populations tend to explode during a warm Spring.

Roof rats are small, and only need a hole the size of a quarter to squeeze through and get into your attic or home.

Roof rats carry disease, although none have been found to carry anything as fatal as the Black Plague here in Gilbert or throughout Arizona.

Roof rats eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, pet food and invertebrates (spiders and worms, for example). They will also eat paper.

Female roof rats can each have up to four litters a year, each containing five to eight young. In urban areas where they have no natural predators, the survival rate of the babies is high.

If you have the following items around your home, you may be more prone to attracting roof rats: palm trees, yucca plants, pampas grass, honeysuckle, Italian cypress trees, any heavy shrubbery, wood piles, and storage boxes.

How to Tell if Your Gilbert Home Has Roof Rats

Roof rats are nocturnal, so the easiest way to tell if you have them is to listen at night when lying in bed. Roof rats tend to make the nests in the attic of your Gilbert home, so pay attention to noises from above your head when the sun goes down.

You might also notice small pellet droppings on the ground in or around your attic, or near citrus trees.

If you have citrus trees and notice any fruit on the ground that have been completely hollowed out, you probably have roof rats.

How to Get Rid of Roof Rats

The best way to get rid of roof rats is to prevent them from even coming to your Gilbert home.

Keep your trees trimmed, and your bushes and vines thinned. Make sure trees are trimmed back from the house at least 4 feet.

Keep the lids on your garbage closed at all times.

And, just as we suggest for keeping scorpions away, keep all citrus off of the ground, keep all debris cleaned (including leaves) and away from your home, don’t store pet food outside and eliminate any standing water.

If you do have roof rats in your Gilbert home, you can…

Purchase rat traps from your local hardware store and set them all around your home and within the attic. We highly recommend avoiding any rat poisonings or chemicals to get rid of roof rats. The last thing that you want to do is poison a child or family pet…or the neighbor’s.

And, of course, you can always call Magic Pest Control to take care of your roof rat situation. In fact, this really is your best option. Roof rats get into everything and, just like termites, can destroy everything.

You don’t want to take any chances with these pests, especially because of the diseases they can carry.

If you suspect that you have roof rats in your Gilbert home, call Magic Pest Control today!!

Do Chickens Really Work as Pest Control for Scorpions?

Do Chickens Really Work as Pest Control for Scorpions?

Maintaining chickens has become quite popular in Gilbert and around the Phoenix-metro areas.

Many times, our Pest Control professionals will visit a Gilbert or Chandler home for Scorpion extermination and find the homeowner has chickens or has questions about chickens for scorpions.

It’s not uncommon here in Gilbert to come across a home with a nice little chicken coop in the backyard. The interesting thing to take note of is that our Pest Control experts still visit homes with chickens in the backyard….

So today I want to answer the question, “Do chickens keep scorpions away?”

Do Chickens Really Work as Pest Control?

Chickens for Scorpion Control

Gilbert and Phoenix homeowners who invest in chickens for their yard usually do so for the Unlimited Supply of eggs. Keeping chickens is fairly inexpensive, and if your neighborhood allows it it can  actually save you money in the long run.

Chickens will eat scorpions.

If they find a scorpion in your yard or around your home, they will eat it.

The reason that we end up going out to Gilbert homes with chickens is because chickens are not nocturnal, and scorpions are.

Most scorpions will do most of their hunting and feeding at night, when chickens are usually sleeping.

With that said, however, chickens will eat a scorpion’s food source.

Chickens eat things like crickets and cockroaches, the very pests that scorpions like to dine on.

If you tend to have more cockroaches, beetles, and crickets in your yard, or home, you will tend to have more scorpions.

But, if you have chickens, they will eat all of these bugs that scorpions eat as well. Keep in mind, that most of these pests are nocturnal just like scorpions, and you most of their moving around at night.

So, if you want chickens to act as a pest control strategy because they will eat all of the things that you don’t want in your home, they have to cross paths with those pests and that doesn’t happen as often as you would probably like.

Your best bet, call in a pest control expert!

Arizona Block Wall Fencing and Scorpions

When our Gilbert pest control experts visit your home, we spend a great deal of time spraying and dusting every square inch of the house.

We make sure to hit every curve and corner, both inside and out.

Our pest control professionals will also use a mirror to check beneath your home for foundation cracks and holes…the entrance points to many Arizona pests, particularly scorpions.

But, the area of your home that is probably most infested with scorpions is probably not in or on your home…

It’s the block wall fencing surrounding your property.

Scorpions love our Arizona block wall fences. And when I say love, I meant LOVE.

Today, let’s take a look at our Gilbert block wall fencing, why it’s so inviting to scorpions (and black widows), and how to get rid of pests that love to live there.

Arizona Block Wall Fencing and Scorpions

Gilbert Block Wall Fencing

I have never, in all of my years living in Arizona, working as a firefighter, and visiting homes on pest control jobs, seen a Gilbert block wall fence that was completely sealed.

Block wall fences have cracks. They have joints that aren’t sealed. They have layers that are missing mortar.

These block wall fences might look beautiful in our Gilbert neighborhoods, but they are the perfect hiding and living spaces for all kinds of pests…particularly scorpions.

When we come to your Gilbert home, we focus a great deal of our attention on these block wall fences. We dust every single nook and cranny of these fences.

We hit the corners of the fences on the edge of your property, all the way around to where the fence meets your home. We dust all columns where the mortar usually doesn’t seal the bricks perfectly and there are cracks. We dust all spaces between blocks that were not sealed properly.

When we hit your block wall fencing, we hit it hard.

Why do Scorpions Love Block Wall Fences?

Because they are secluded, dark, shaded form the harsh sun, and usually full of food.

They can easily get into the fencing through the unsealed spaces, and move through the blocks where the mortar is not perfectly sealed.

How Do I Prevent Them From Getting In?

Seal your Gilbert block wall fencing with common caulking. Take a weekend and walk the fence line, both front and back. It’s going to take a lot of caulking, but if you can seal even the areas closest to your home you will keep scorpions away.

Of course, you can always call in your Magic Pest Control experts to seal your home from scorpions with our scorpion sealing packages….

Areas of Gilbert that have a coat of paint or sealant on the block wall fencing usually won’t see as many scorpions living in those fences. Unless there are cracks in the paint, scorpions won’t be able to get into the blocks if they’re covered with pain.
If you are seeing an influx of scorpions this season, don’t wait any longer to call in our pest control professionals to your Gilbert home! If they’re in your block wall fencing, they will soon be in your home.

Using Velcro Strips to Keep Scorpions Out

Using Velcro Strips to Keep Scorpions Out

Did you know that something as simple as a velcro strip can help keep scorpions out of your home?

You’re doing everything that you can to keep scorpions out of your home. You spray and lay down Diatomaceous Earth. You try to seal up any cracks or caulking splits. You even apply extra weather strips around your doors and windows.

And yet, somehow, those pesky scorpions are finding their way into your home.

The easiest thing that you can do is to call Magic Pest Control to come out to your Gilbert home…especially with the great scorpion specials that we have running right now.

But, sometimes you just have to go DIY and seal up your Gilbert home from pests in the best ways that you know how.

So, today I want to tell you about a little known pest control secret that will help you achieve your goal, and keep scorpions out of your home for good!

Using Velcro Strips to Keep Scorpions Out

Velcro Weather Stripping

You may have never heard or seen velcro weather stripping at your local hardware store. It’s not often used to keeping the heat out during the summer, or the air conditioned, cool air in.

Because of it’s design, this velcro stripping is also called hook and loop tapes.

Head down to Walmart, Home Depot or Lowe’s and ask for some velcro strips…or velcro weather strips… and you might get a funny look or two.

But, because of the design and structure of these strips, scorpions will avoid them.

Yes, scorpions like surfaces that they can cling on to…

Surfaces like stucco walls, block walls, concrete, etc.

But, just as a cow will avoid crossing a cow guard because of the spaces between bars, a scorpion will avoid (or get stuck) in a velcro strip because of the spaces, or hooks and loops.

Where do you put the velcro strips?

Grab some with a sticky side and place it beneath your door or in front of the door, underneath the door threshold, around the sides the top of the door, and around windows.

The next time you have our Magic Pest Control exterminators out to your Gilbert home, ask us about velcro strips, and any other tips we might have for keeping pests out of your house!

Our guys are always willing to share their extensive knowledge on scorpions and pest control!

What is Scorpion Dusting?

What is Scorpion Dusting?

You’ve probably heard the term a few times, dusting, from Gilbert pest control professionals.

When our guys come out to your home, we not only spray for scorpions and other types of pests, we dust as well.

Insecticide dusts are just that…a powder pest control medium that allows our Magic Pest Control professionals to cover an area, such as the inside of block walls, with a more effective technique.

Today, let’s talk about pest control dusts, why we use them, and what they do…

Pest Control Dusting

An insecticide dust is a dry formulation of a contact insecticide.  Dusts are used in different areas such as gardens, wall voids and other areas where certain bugs are pests.

Dust formulated insecticides are injected into cracks and crevices with a Crusader Duster or broadcast in attics, gardens, crawl spaces with a Dustin Mizer crank duster.

If you’re using pest control dust at home, it’s important to know how to use it. Pest control dust is not like spray, and thus cannot be used in the same way.

Do not use it in open areas such as cabinets and along baseboards. This would be an improper use of the product. The roaches, scorpions and ants will simply go around the small piles of dust, making it completely ineffective.

A dust should be applied to cracks, crevices, entry points and hiding places.  Wall voids and areas beneath false bottoms of cabinets are good places to apply a dust.  These are the areas where bugs hide and they are out of reach of pets and children.

Our Gilbert pest control professionals actually use a duster that puffs thin clouds of this pest control dust into any cracks in your foundation or walls, crevices and voids around plumbing, and in between seals on block fencing.

These surfaces will now contain small amounts of insecticide that bugs cannot avoid as they crawl through the area, giving you a better kill or knock-down of your targeted pest.

If you are seeing scorpions, ants or spiders in or around your Gilbert home, give the pest control experts at Magic Pest Control a call. We’ll spray, dust and lay out glue traps!

Why Scorpions Love Weeds

Scorpions, just like every other pest, loves shady, cool areas that are dark and full of food.

Weeds are the perfect spot, and meet all of these necessities for scorpions.

Weeds, leaves and debris that pile up near or around your home give scorpions the perfect spot for sneaking their way into your home through cracks in the foundation…tiny, minuscule cracks that you don’t even realize are there, especially if they’re covered by weeds or leaves.

Weeds are full of other critters, making them a perfect place to find food.

Weeds are also usually damp and cool, making for the perfect conditions for scorpions.
